Literary Studies

The Leiden University Master's in Literary Studies offers separate one - year programmes in English, French, German and Italian literature and culture, as well as Literature in Society. This master's is an excellent way of deepening and broadening your knowledge of the literature and culture of your specialisation, thus becoming a true specialist.

All courses are taught in the language of your specialisation. The Master's programmes in English, French, German and Italian liter ature cover the entire range of these literatures, from medieval to early modern, modern and contemporary. You will benefit from co urses given by experts in terms of the period (middle ages, early modern, modern, post - modern and post - colonial) but also interms of rhetoric, semiotics, intermediality, inter - cultural history and other approaches current in Literary Studies.

Use the vast range of options to construct your personal programme. You may include a course in English, French, German or Italian linguistics. You may also include a course in the national Masterlanguage programme or go abroad to the country of your speci alisation, for an internship or university courses.

Curriculum and Overview

The aim of the MA Literary Studies is to introduce ambitious students to the concepts and academic approaches current in Literary Studies.

At the conclusion of the programme you will have acquired in - depth knowledge and the ability to think critically and analytically, all essential for a successful career in your chosen profession. Opportunities are provided for students to broaden thei r world experience and professional skills in preparation to excel early in their chosen career.

Alumni of the MA in Literary Studies can be found employed in a wide variety of fields. Our graduates work within public relations, journalism, in translation agencies, or as copywriters, correctors, education - centre directors, policy - makers in city counsels and ministries, cultural representatives, art editors for newspapers, and librarians or lectors at publishing houses. You will also be qualified to continue in academic research and could choose to apply for a PhD programme.
