Latin American Studies

The Master's in Latin American Studies at Leiden University offers a dvanced language skills, specialised knowledge and real - world experience of Latin American culture and society.

Taught by scholars from Leiden University's internationally - acclaimed Humanities department as well as our partner universities in Latin Americ an, this master's offers the latest insights on the social, political, linguistic and cultural developments shaping Latin America.

An important focus is on developing your fluency in Spanish. Several courses and seminars are taught in Spanish and you are encouraged to conduct fieldwork for your MA thesis in Latin America. Specialise in one of three disciplinary tracks:

  • Public Policies in Latin America
  • Cultural Analysis in Latin America
  • Language Variation and Bilingualism

Outstanding resources and a high level of one - to - one interaction with your lecturers ensure you reach your full potential as an academic or future practitioner – just some of the reasons why this programme attracts talented students from around the world.

Curriculum and Overview

Students choose from the following three disciplinary tracks:

  • Public Policies in Latin America 
  • Cultural Analysis in Latin America
  • Language Variation and Bilingualism

An intensive research seminar and a theoretical seminar are taken from mid - September to mid - October. You must then submit a proposal for your field research in Latin America. 

From mid - November to late January you will conduct field research in Latin America for your MA thesis. If yo u are from Latin America you may conduct your research on a subject related to Latin America in the Netherlands or a neighbouring European country.

During your second semester you study one or two electives in Leiden. Each year, a prominent scholar from Brazil and Chile teaches a course on a relevant topic.

To conclude the programme you must submit an original master's thesis. You can write your thesis in Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, or English.

The MA in Latin American Studies prepares you for a wide range of positions that require in - depth knowledge of Latin America and advanced language skills.

Graduates of the Master's in Latin American Studies do very well in the job market. Your qualification can lead to roles in cultural organisations, education, translation, tourism, publishing, documentation and information processing, development, embassies, ministries of foreign affairs, and semi - governmen tal and non - profit organisations with a focus on Latin America. You are also well - equipped to pursue a PhD position.
