Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam hosts an internationally respected centre of learning and research in the field of Archaeology. Its staff is renowned for its high-quality teaching and research projects, having obtained numerous prestigious national and international grants. With strong links with archaeology, history and heritage institutions in the Netherlands and abroad, the VU Archaeology provides a dedicated interdisciplinary and international research environment, and as such an outstanding working environment for students and staff.
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offers MA and RMA degrees in Archaeology to students from the EU and beyond. Both students and experts rate the quality of teaching at VU Archaeology highly. Thanks to a unique structure of partnerships, we are able to offer our students a large variety of course options and topics, ranging from the writing of theoretical treatises to archaeological fieldwork and laboratory analysis. Both disciplinary and interdisciplinary curricula can be selected; students can either specialise in a particular field of archaeology or broaden their interest from a Humanities-wide perspective. The VU offers its Archaeology program in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam, in the context of the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology
(ACASA). The Humanities perspective is embedded in the VU department of Art and Culture, History and Antiquities (AHA), which opens windows to challenging related academic fields such as environmental or digital humanities and cultural heritage studies.
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam (UvA) offer a joint Master's programme in Archaeology within the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology (ACASA), which also offers a range of other Master's programmes in the field of Ancient studies. Thanks to this joint venture you can choose from a wide range of subjects which allows you to develop as an archaeologist in many different specialisms.
