This specialization is intended for students who want to specialize in health promotion and disease prevention. You will gain a broad overview of the theory, research and practice in the field of prevention and public health. The focus is on health behaviour, disease prevention, communication, lifestyle interventions and environmental interventions.
After gaining insight in the systematic approach of developing interventions (i.e. intervention mapping), you will study a range of interventions and how to determine their effectiveness. In some courses, the focus will be on primary prevention, however the optional course ‘Health Psychology’ deals with tertiary prevention, i.e. interventions to enable patients to cope better with their illness. Sometimes the focus will be on interventions targeted at the individual level, whereas in an optional course as ‘Prevention and Policy’, the focus will be on policy interventions for much broader groups. Both the prevention of physical illnesses and the prevention of mental health problems are part of this specialization.
Health related behaviours and the environment: interventions to promote health and to prevent disease.
Most of our students get a job in public health at an academic level within months after finishing their study. Students typically find a job at their internship provider or a similar organization and about 15 percent enter a PhD-position.
