Molecular Mechanisms of Disease - Uni

Linking theory to practice
Cells organize and rule our bodies. Disturbances in cellular processes can lead to serious disorders such as metabolism and immune diseases, heart and circulation problems, cancer, and the diseases that come with age. The Nijmegen Centre for Molecular Life Sciences (NCMLS) plays a leading role in the fight against these diseases. This research institute engages in a continual exchange of knowledge and expertise between clinic and research laboratory. This is possible thanks to close cooperation with the nearby University Medical Centre. As a student in the Research Master’s programme Molecular Mechanisms of Disease, you will find yourself in a dynamic research environment – one in which every new theoretical insight may be the key to a new medicine or better diagnosis and treatment.

Experts
Education is closely linked to NCMLS’s research programme. The scientists in this internationally recognized institute are experts in the following fields:
• Infection, immunity and tissue repair (in diseases such as AIDS and malaria)
• Metabolism, transport and motion (in diseases such as diabetes)
• Cell growth and differentiation (in diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer)

During your Master’s programme you will specialize in one of these areas.

Exclusive education
Each year we select the top 10% of students, who apply from around the world. In fact, two-thirds of our students come from abroad. As a Master’s student you will find yourself in the company of ambitious, highly-motivated students. The programme is intensive and stimulating with plenty of room for discussion and involvement. You will have a personal mentor with whom you will plan your individual programme of study and discuss future options. During each internship – the second of which will be abroad – you will also have an individual supervisor. Thanks to the international networks built up by our scientists, there are many opportunities for challenging internships.

Research-oriented
This programme trains you to carry out supervised research. But you will also get a thorough training in skills such as academic writing, making grant applications and the verbal and written presentation of research results. Three times a year the programme organizes international Master classes with top international researchers. You will have the honour of introducing the guest speaker and leading the plenary discussion.

The programme
The programme, which takes two years, is structured as follows:

First year:

  • Introductory course (1.5 EC)
  • International Master classes (3 EC)
  • Infection, immunity and tissue repair (5.5 EC)
  • Metabolism, transport and motion (5.5 EC)
  • Cell growth and differentiation (5.5 EC)
  • Communication skills (1.5 EC)
  • Elective courses (2 EC)
  • Science & society (1.5 EC)
  • Research internship (34 EC)

Second year:

  • Elective courses (9.5 EC)
  • Statistics course (4 EC)
  • International Master class (1.5 EC)
  • Research internship (45 EC)

Once you’ve graduated, you’ll be awarded a Master of Science degree.

Career prospects
This Master’s programme gives you the qualifications you need to enter an international PhD programme. About 90% of our graduates go on to do a PhD in Nijmegen or elsewhere in the world. They distinguish themselves through their knowledge and independent attitude to their work. Within our own research organization we have vacancies every year. For the very best students we have MSc and PhD scholarships.

Admission requirements

  • The equivalent of a Dutch Bachelor’s degree in medical biology, molecular medicine, biochemistry, biotechnology or any biomedical education with an emphasis on cell and molecular biology and a minimum of three months lab experience (as evaluated by the Board of Examiners)
  • challenging interview
  • Fluency in both written and spoken English. A TOEFL score of at least 600 or IELTS 7 for non-native speakers of English

Application

This Master’s programme begins in September. Registration closes on 1 January for students outside the EEA and on 1 April for students from EEA countries.
